James Bearn born 1752
at Kettering was Apprenticed
aged 14 to John Payne who was
his Stepfather whose profession was that of a
Sergeweaver he was Apprenticed for 7 Years .
In 1775 James enlisted in the Royal
Regiment of Artillery and served in
Canada. He returned to England in 1784 and
transferred to the Invalid Battalion.
Whilst in Kettering he married Elizabeth Fox
and had two sons
William and Thomas .
James was recalled for service
in the Invalid Regiment in 1793 and served in
the Bermuda Garrison until
1805 and died on the return journey
aboard the armed ship Persevarance
and was buried at sea.
William Bearn James’s son had gone with his
father to Bermuda and on his return to England
set up a clock and watch making business in
Wellingborough.
